In a decisive push towards self-reliance in the maritime sector, the government has accelerated efforts to strengthen India’s shipping capabilities amid evolving developments around the Strait of Hormuz, a critical global maritime energy corridor.A high-level inter-ministerial review meeting, chaired by Union Minister of Ports, Shipping and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal, focused on building a robust and future-ready maritime ecosystem to safeguard national supply chains.The meeting brought together senior officials from key Ministries, including Petroleum and Natural Gas, Chemicals and Fertilisers, along with representatives from public sector oil companies, the Directorate General of Shipping, National Shipping Board and the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT).Ambitious goalsHighlighting the government’s vision, Mr. Sonowal said India is positioning shipping at the core of its economic resilience under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He outlined an ambitious road map to add 62 vessels in the financial year 2026–27, backed by an investment of ₹51,383 crore, which is expected to create an additional capacity of 2.85 million gross tonnage.Reviewing the global maritime scenario and its implications, the Union Minister called for urgent expansion of India’s fleet, including container vessels, LPG carriers, crude oil tankers and green tugs. He also assessed cargo flows, vessel movements and operational preparedness, underscoring the need to enhance capabilities across segments such as dredging vessels and tankers to withstand external disruptions.Mr. Sonowal reviewed the progress of a proposed joint venture involving the Shipping Corporation of India and oil public sector undertakings to acquire 59 vessels, a move aimed at strengthening domestic shipping capacity.‘Prepare White Paper’Emphasising coordinated action, he directed all departments to prepare a comprehensive White Paper identifying gaps, setting clear targets and outlining a time-bound road map for maritime growth. He stressed close collaboration among Ministries linked to supply chains, including commerce and industry.Reiterating the importance of maritime security, the Minister said the safety of Indian seafarers remains paramount, with agencies instructed to maintain heightened vigilance in sensitive zones.
