Australia’s Consul-General to Chennai, Silai Zaki, led a solemn service to commemorate Anzac Day at the Madras War Cemetery recently.
Anzac Day, observed on April 25, is a National Day of Remembrance in Australia and New Zealand, which marks the anniversary of the landing of the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps (ANZAC) on the shores of Gallipoli, Türkiye, in 1915.
“As Australia’s Consul-General to Chennai, I am deeply moved to be here at the Madras War Cemetery in Chennai to pay tribute not only to the Australians and New Zealanders who served and fell, but also to the many Indian soldiers who stood alongside them,” Ms. Zaki said.
A total of 15 Australians and six New Zealanders have been laid to rest at the Madras War Cemetery.
Australia’s Deputy High Commissioner to India Nicholas McCaffrey, Indian Armed Forces personnel, representatives of diplomatic missions, and Australian citizens were also present at the ceremony.
