Enumerators, all government school teachers, conducting the door-to-door survey in the Capital as part of the first phase of Census 2027 after school hours have now been directed to also carry out the exercise in the morning hours on weekends till May 15 to speed up work.
The House Listing and Housing Census commenced in New Delhi district on April 16 in the jurisdictions of the New Delhi Municipal Council and the Delhi Cantonment. It comprises two stages: physical mapping and geotagging of houses, and door-to-door survey. The first stage has been completed and the survey is likely to be concluded by May 15.
A circular from the office of the Principal Census Officer of New Delhi district issued on Friday noted that “progress of the household [census] has not been satisfactory”. “Since, completion of household enumeration is a time-bound exercise and a statutory obligation, it is now, therefore, directed that all enumerators and supervisors shall attend field duties in the morning hours of every Saturday and Sunday till May 15,” it read.
The circular was issued after several enumerators and supervisors cited several challenges in carrying out the survey after school hours on weekdays from 1.30 p.m.: soaring temperatures touching 43 degrees Celsius and people unavailable at their residences or unwilling to respond.
