Chennai Metrowater has begun work to refurbish the tertiary treatment reverse osmosis (TTRO) plant in Kodungaiyur to enhance the quality of treated wastewater to the Minjur-Manali and Manali-Ennore industrial corridors. The water agency aims to optimise the use of recycled water and identify more industries to supply the treated water.
The ₹102.70-crore project to renovate and upgrade the TTRO plant, which was commissioned in 2019, has been entrusted to VA Tech Wabag, a water and wastewater technology company under a Refurbish, Finance, Operate, Maintain and Transfer (RFOMT) model.
The plant’s operational capacity would be restored to 45 million litres of wastewater daily (mld) to improve the quality and quantity of supply to the industries, said officials.
As part of its efforts to boost Chennai’s water resilience, Metrowater currently supplies a total of 47 mld from its TTRO plants in Kodungaiyur and Koyambedu, which have a total designed capacity of 90 mld. Restoring the plant’s performance would help address the growing water demand in key industrial clusters. Officials noted that the work would involve the replacement of various components, including reverse osmosis and ultra filtration membranes.
