Residents in parts of north Chennai will now receive improved drinking water supply as additional overhead and underground tanks have been constructed for storage and distribution.
Municipal Administration Minister K.N. Nehru and Minister for Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments P. K. Sekarbabu inaugurated the project on Friday. About 70,000 residents in George Town, Clive Battery, and Mannady would benefit from the ₹27.50-crore project. An underground storage tank with 15 lakh litre capacity constructed at Davidson Street, Broadway was inaugurated on Friday.
A pipeline of 400 metre diameter has also been laid for a length of 1.14 km as part of the first phase of the project.
Chennai Metrowater is also constructing two more overhead tanks with a storage capacity of 15 lakh litres to strengthen the piped water supply in the localities. Work is in progress to lay a 300-metre diameter pipeline stretching nearly one km, said a press release.
Some of the densely populated localities in north Chennai have long faced issues related to water supply and sewage disposal due to the ageing infrastructure.
