Joining Hart on the judging panel are comedy heavyweights Chelsea Handler, Keegan-Michael Key and Kumail Nanjiani, as they travel to the top comedy clubs across the country in search of what Hart calls “the next household name and voice of a generation.”If you need a better sense of how the show works, think “Rhythm + Flow” (Netflix’s rap competition series) but for comedy. Same format of auditions, callbacks and challenges, all leading up to a live finale where viewers at home get to vote for the winner. And the grand prize? A coveted Netflix special. The first three episodes consist of auditions in New York City, Los Angeles and Chicago, while Episode 4 features callbacks in LA with the top 18 comics. Honestly, I couldn’t stop laughing throughout. This is unhinged, unfiltered, raw comedy at its finest from a lot of fresh-faced talent — almost reminiscent of the kind of comedians you’d find on “Def Comedy Jam” or “Comic View.” Just about all of the names on the lineup were unfamiliar to me, but I’m walking away with a lot of new favorites now, which I think is the beauty of “Funny AF.” It’s about time a competition series like this made it onto Netflix. In an era of so many social media skit comedians, it’s refreshing to see Netflix use its platform to spotlight stand-up comedy from up-and-comers — at least to let people know it’s not a dying art. And every single contestant on “Funny AF” is impressive in their own way. After dozens of auditions, the show is now down to 10 finalists, who you can check out here. No matter who ends up winning the competition, I feel like the real win being able to discover a whole new generation of comedians you might not have come across otherwise, which is what really makes the show worth watching. The first four episodes of “Funny AF With Kevin Hart” are streaming now on Netflix. New episodes premiere on April 27, followed by the live semi-final and finale on Netflix at 6 p.m. PT / 9 p.m. ET on May 4 and 5, respectively.See All UpdatesClose
