Maharashtra gears up for bypolls in two high-profile constituencies — Baramati in Pune, the stronghold of late Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar, and Rahuri in Ahilyanagar, on Thursday (April 23, 2026).
Baramati already seems like a one-sided contest, as Congress paved the way for Deputy Chief Minister Sunetra Pawar by withdrawing its candidate.
Sunetra Ajit Pawar is seen as the primary contender after the withdrawal of Congress party candidate Akash More. However, there are still 22 other nominees in the fray against Sunetra Pawar, with 20 being independents and the two others being Prof. R.Y. Ghutukade from the New Rashtriya Samaj Party and Satish Kadam from the Hindustan Janta Party.
I have doubts about Ajit Pawar’s air crash, says Sunetra Pawar
The Baramati bypolls hold significance, as these will be the first elections since the death of the eight-time MLA from the constituency, Ajit Pawar.
