The Election Commission of India (ECI) on Wednesday (April 22, 2026) said it had taken “serious note” of Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge calling Prime Minister Narendra Modi a “terrorist” and issued a “stern” notice to him. Mr. Kharge has to respond to the notice within 24 hours, ECI sources said.

The ECI move comes after a delegation of senior Bharatiya Janata Party leaders met the commission earlier in the day regarding its complaint seeking action against Mr. Kharge for his “terrorist” remark against Mr. Modi.

The delegation comprised Union Ministers Nirmala Sitharaman, Kiren Rijiju and Arjun Ram Meghwal, BJP national general secretary Arun Singh, and Om Pathak.

On Tuesday (April 21, 2026), the BJP had lodged the complaint alleging that Mr. Kharge violated the Model Code of Conduct (MCC). It said such “rhetoric lowers the level of campaign discourse, inflamed passions, and undermined free and fair elections”.
