Although it had been expected two days earlier, the trip to Islamabad by Vice President JD Vance for a second round of negotiations with Iran was postponed on Tuesday, April 21, due to a lack of Iranian interlocutors. As the 15-day ceasefire was set to expire, Donald Trump gathered his closest advisers at the White House.
After these consultations, Trump decided to step back and not follow through on his threat. On Sunday, he mentioned for the second time his intention to order the bombing of all bridges and power plants in Iran if the regime failed to meet US demands. On Tuesday, citing a request from the Pakistani mediator, Trump extended the ceasefire without specifying a new deadline.
