Vacation Orange Gelée

The sign that summer has officially started just might be the smell of sunscreen. Often, that’s a fruity or tropical fragrance. But in the case of Orange Gelée, its iconic sweet, spicy and musky scent is instantly recognizable—and beloved around the globe. That’s been the case for an entire century now, as the world-famous SPF is celebrating its 100th birthday.

“It quite literally might be the oldest sunscreen in the world, which is remarkable, and that deserves to be celebrated,” says Vacation co-founder Lach Hall. “We love what Orange Gelée has done in helping to kickstart the sun care industry, but also doing it in such a luxurious, sensorial way, which makes sunscreen something you look forward to wearing. It enhances your moment in the sun, rather than being a chore. That's exactly been our mission from day one at Vacation. It's an absolutely beloved, cult favorite product, with thousands of fans all around the world, including us. We feel we'd be doing a disservice not to mark the occasion.”

Orange Gelée was originally created in 1926 by the first celebrity hairstylist, Monsieur Antoine. It launched when sun-tanning culture was starting to take off, during the era when none other than Coco Chanel popularized having a tan. One of the very first sun care products, Orange Gelée became a sunscreen staple from the 1960s through the 1990s, earning famous fans spanning from Brigitte Bardot to Pamela Anderson to Tom Ford, Bobbi Brown and Michael Kors.
