April 21 (UPI) -- Singer Alan Osmond has died at the age of 76 after a decades-long battle with multiple sclerosis.

His wife Suzanne and their eight sons were by his side when he died Monday night, his family said in a statement.

Alan was part of the Utah-based Osmond singing family, which first gained fame in the 1970s and included breakout stars Donny, Marie and Jimmy.

Alan had retired from performing after he was diagnosed with MS 40 years ago.

"Please, don't let your hearts be heavy. Don't weep for him. Rejoice, knowing that your brother, your friend, your hero is no longer in pain," Alan's brother Merrill wrote on Facebook Tuesday.
