A major fire and explosion at a fireworks manufacturing unit at Mundathikode near Thrissur in Kerala left at least five people dead and several workers injured on Tuesday (April 21, 2026), according to preliminary information.

The incident occurred at a unit engaged in preparing fireworks for the Thiruvambady faction of the Thrissur Pooram. The facility was reportedly producing materials for the sample fireworks scheduled on April 24.

Authorities said the exact number of workers present at the time of the incident remains unclear, though unconfirmed reports suggest around 40 people may have been inside the unit.

The police, Fire and Rescue Services, and ambulances rushed to the scene, and the injured were shifted to Government Medical College Hospital, Thrissur, and nearby hospitals.
