Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi on Friday (April 17, 2026) said the defeat of the Constitution Amendment Bill linked to the women’s reservation law marked a decisive pushback against “an attack on the Constitution” and asserted that the Opposition had successfully blocked an attempt to alter India’s electoral framework.

Speaking to reporters after the Constitution Amendment Bill failed to secure the required two-thirds majority in the Lok Sabha, Mr. Gandhi said the government’s proposal was “not a women’s Bill” but a political exercise aimed at reshaping representation.

He said if Prime Minister Narendra Modi brings the original 2023 women’s reservation law into force immediately, the Opposition will support it unconditionally.
