He will then take on the role of chairman emeritus, pushing ahead the succession plan in one of India’s largest conglomerates with interests in agribusiness, consumer goods, chemicals and real estate.Nadir will be succeeded by his older brother Adi Godrej’s Son, Pirojsha Godrej, who is currently the chairman of Godrej Properties. Nadir’s son, Burjis Godrej, who is currently an executive director at Godrej Agrovet, will become chairman of the animal feeds and crop protection unit and join the board of Godrej Industries as a non-executive director, the Mumbai-listed company announced on Monday.“It has been a privilege to serve the Godrej Industries Group over several decades and to work alongside exceptional colleagues who have built this institution with integrity and purpose,” Nadir, chairman of Godrej Industries Group, said in the statement. “I am confident that the group will continue to grow from strength to strength under the next generation of leadership, while remaining deeply anchored in its values.”Nadir—who obtained his degree in chemical engineering from MIT, masters in chemical engineering from Stanford University and an M.B.A. from Harvard Business School—joined the family business more than four decades ago. Since becoming chairman in 2021, he helped grow the group comprising four listed companies—Godrej Consumer Products, Godrej Industries, Godrej Properties and Godrej Agrovet—with a combined market value of about $21 billion as of mid-April. Pirojsha has been the chairman of Godrej Properties since 2017 when he succeeded his father, Adi Godrej who became chairman emeritus of the property company that year. His older brother, Adi, is also a billionaire with a net worth of about $4.1 billion, and chairman emeritus of Godrej Industries. In 2024, the siblings and their cousins, Jamshyd Godrej and Smita Chrishna Godrej, who are also billionaires, split the family business empire into two separate groups. Adi and Nadir controlled the publicly listed Godrej Industries and its listed subsidiaries, while their cousins took the helm at the unlisted Mumbai-based Godrej Enterprises, which has interests in aerospace, home appliances, engineering, furniture, logistics and real estate.The century-old conglomerate pioneered the world’s first commercially made soap using vegetable oil (and without animal fat) during the Spanish flu pandemic in 1918. Since then, the Godrej name has become widely recognized in India for a range of everyday consumer products, including locks, furniture and home appliances such as refrigerators and washing machines.
