A 21-year-old engineering student died, and four others were injured after an unexploded explosive device exploded when a group of students inadvertently kicked it during a trek near the Anumanthapuram firing range under the Singaperumal Koil police limits on Monday (April 13, 2026) evening.
Police sources said the deceased has been identified as Emansu Yadav, 21, a fourth-year student of a private engineering college. Police said the incident occurred around 5.30 pm when a group of six students climbed a hill located near the firing range, without permission. They are said to have undertaken trekking. The students travelled on three two-wheelers, reached the hilltop and noticed a strange iron object. One of them kicked the object, which struck a rock and detonated.
Emansu Yadav sustained fatal injuries to his chest, shoulder and arm and died at the scene. The injured are Vishal Venugopal, 21, a fourth-year mechanical engineering student from Hyderabad, Aryan Sharma, 21, from Uttar Pradesh, Krishna Siraj Mahajan, 21, from Jammu, and Nishkas Niraj, 21, from New Delhi. Another student, Virat Sanjay Kumar, 23, from Meerut, escaped without injury.
The injured were shifted to SRM Hospital in Potheri by a 108 ambulance, where they were undergoing treatment.
