Primaries to establish who should be the leader of the centre left to fight Premier Giorgia Meloni in the next general election should be open to all Italian citizens and not just card-carrying centre-left voters, 5-Star Movement (M5S) leader Giuseppe Conte said Monday.

The mechanism whereby the leader of the party that gets the most votes becomes the coalition leader and premier candidate should not be valid for the centre left as it is for the cenhtre right, the two-time ex premier also said at the presentation of his new book, A New Spring.

Elly Schlein is the leader of the biggest centre-left party, the Democratic Party (PD).

Asked if the M5S would stay in the coalition if Schlein won the primaries, Conte replied "of course".

He stressed yet again that a coalition programme must be drawn up before the primaries can take place.
