Members of the Salt Satyagraha Movement marked the 96th anniversary of the historic march from Tiruchi to Vedaranyam in protest against the salt tax levied by the British, with a remembrance meeting in the city on Monday.
The event commemorated the march undertaken on April 13, 1930, when 100 volunteers set out from T.S.S. Rajan Bungalow under the leadership of Rajaji to gather salt at Vedaranyam protesting against the salt tax.
The event was inaugurated by L. Rex, president, Urban District Congress Committee, at the Vedaranyam Salt Satyagraha Memorial installed at the entrance of Dr. T.S.S Rajan bungalow near Central Bus Stand. Members from the different districts of the Tamil Nadu Salt Satyagraha Movement took part in the programme.
“After the Tiruchi event, arrangements will be made to conduct a related programme in Vedaranyam on April 28,” Mr. Rex told The Hindu. The commemoration was held in a low-key manner in keeping with the Model Code of Conduct rules, he added.
In his address, S. Pushpavanam, secretary, Consumer Protection Council, Tamil Nadu, said that sites associated with the nation’s freedom struggle in Tiruchi should be preserved for posterity.
