Genoa Mayor Silvia Salis said Friday she would consider running against Premier Giorgia Meloni in the next general election if the centre left asked her to, but that she had four years left on her five-year mandate as mayor of the northwestern port city.

Salis has previously been non-committal when it has been suggested she could be the best new face the centre left can offer in the hope of beating Meloni in an election currently scheduled for September next year.

"If they asked me to run against Giorgia Meloni? It would be a lie to say I wouldn't consider it.

This national attention flatters me," Salis said in response to Bloomberg, which dedicated a lengthy article to the mayor of Genoa, describing her as "the new face of Italy and a possible anti-Giorgia Meloni candidate.

"The referendum defeat suffered by Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni last month," Bloomberg notes at the beginning of the article, "is galvanizing the Italian opposition," recognizing Salis as a potential competitor to the current prime minister in the next elections.
