A total of 189 individuals tested positive for drug consumption during a surprise screening drive conducted on rowdy sheeters and known drug users by the Hyderabad Narcotics Enforcement Wing (H-NEW) and Task Force on Thursday (April 9, 2026).
Medical tests were conducted in coordination with doctors at Gandhi Hospital, Osmania General Hospital and Government Hospital for Mental Care in Erragadda.
At Gandhi Hospital, 70 persons were tested, of whom 44 were found positive and 26 negative. At Osmania General Hospital, 80 persons were tested, with 59 testing positive and 21 negative. At the Government Hospital for Mental Care in Erragadda, 89 persons were tested, with 86 found positive and three negative.
Objective
The police said the exercise was aimed at creating awareness among habitual offenders and drug consumers about the legal consequences of substance abuse. Those who tested positive were counselled by psychiatrists on the harmful effects of drugs and the need for rehabilitation.
