A 35-year-old remand prisoner died on Thursday after he was admitted to the Government Stanley Hospital due to difficulty in breathing.
The deceased, Vasanthakumar, of Elephant Gate, was arrested on April 5 for creating a nuisance under the influence of alcohol. He was remanded in judicial custody and lodged at Puzhal prison.
Sources said he complained of difficulty in breathing on Wednesday, following which the prison inmates alerted the staff, who took him to the prison hospital. As his condition worsened, he was shifted to the Government Stanley Hospital. However, he died without responding to treatment.
Following a complaint, the Puzhal police registered a case. Investigation is on to ascertain the cause of death.
