The Congress party leader Pawan Khera on Wednesday (April 9, 2026) knocked the doors of the Telangana High Court seeking protection from arrest by the Assam police in a case registered by them over his remarks on the passport status of the Assam Chief Minister Hemanth Biswa Sarma.
The criminal petition filed by Mr. Khera is likely to come up for hearing before the bench of Justice K. Sujana of the HC in a day or two. The 58-year-old politician allegedly made statements accusing the Assam Chief Minister’s wife had three passports. The Assam police registered a case against him based on a complaint that the remarks made by him were defamatory in nature.
Special teams of Assam police searched the house of the Congress leader earlier in Delhi and seized some documents. The leader was in Hyderabad and moved the Telangana HC seeking a direction to the Assam police not to initiate any coercive steps against him. He also sought anticipatory bail in the case stating that he was yet to receive the First Information Report issued against him in the matter.
