Guwahati: After being questioned for nearly 10 hours on Wednesday, senior Congress leader Pawan Khera appeared for a second round of questioning on Thursday.Khera, at the Assam Police Crime Branch office, is being questioned in connection with cases filed by Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma’s wife, Riniki Bhuyan Sharma. The cases were lodged after Khera alleged that Sharma possessed multiple passports and undisclosed properties abroad.Khera on Wednesday said, “We are all law-abiding people. We do our work. I am cooperating with them.”The Congress leader also hinted that he had been asked to submit certain documents and said he would return to the Crime Branch office.Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma remarked, “The pedas (a type of sweet) of Assam are good.”The CM’s wife has filed criminal complaints against Khera and others at the Guwahati Crime Branch Police Station under various provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.The Supreme Court had granted anticipatory bail to Khera after the Gauhati High Court rejected his plea. The apex court had directed Khera to cooperate with the investigation and appear before Assam Police whenever required.Speaking on May 4 after the Assam election results, Sarma said, “I had made a commitment regarding Pawan Khera, as the Supreme Court has directed him to mark attendance at an Assam Police station. The rest of the film will continue.”Khera had initially approached the Telangana High Court, which granted him seven-day transit anticipatory bail. However, Assam Police challenged the order in the Supreme Court. The apex court stayed the transit bail order and directed Khera to approach the Gauhati High Court. Subsequently, the Gauhati High Court rejected his anticipatory bail plea, following which Khera moved the Supreme Court again. The top court later granted him anticipatory bail.Meanwhile, on April 7, the court of the Chief Judicial Magistrate of Kamrup Metro rejected Assam Police’s plea seeking the issuance of a non-bailable warrant against Khera.
