A pre-Independence era stone inscription of a charitable trust was found and deciphered in Thanjavur recently.
According to Saraswati Mahal Library Tamil Pandit Mani. Maran, the 1.25 feet wide and 2.50 feet high stone inscription was found at Kittappa Vattaram in the heart of Old Thanjavur. It speaks of the charitable activity to be carried out from the income of a fixed deposit and the space where the activity is to be executed.
In the inscription, etched in the name of Nago Bhattakar of Rajagopalaswamy Temple Street, Tanjore Fort, on January 17, 1889, it has been mentioned that the interest from the deposit should be utilised for feeding 10 brahmins on every duvadasi day, Mr. Mani. Maran added.
