A French high-speed TGV train crashed into a truck at a crossing in northern France on Tuesday, April 7, killing the driver and critically injuring two people, officials said. The accident occurred around 7 am between Béthune and Lens in the Pas-de-Calais region, according to rail operator SNCF.

Two people were in critical condition, while 11 others sustained less serious injuries, the prefecture said in an updated tally. Officials had earlier reported that 27 people were injured. There were 243 passengers on board.

According to a spokesperson for the prefecture, the truck was carrying military equipment. Le Monde has learned that the truck was part of a special military convoy transporting a mobile bridge.

French Transport Minister Philippe Tabarot announced that he would travel to the scene with SNCF CEO and former prime minister Jean Castex.
