A major fire broke out at a warehouse belonging to a popular private online grocery retailer at Mambalam in Chennai in the early hours on Tuesday (April 7, 2026), resulting in significant loss of goods.

The warehouse, located on Moosa Street in Mambalam, is used to store vegetables and grocery items procured daily for supply to various outlets operating across the city.

According to sources, employees were engaged in dispatch work at the warehouse early on Tuesday when a sudden fire broke out, reportedly due to an electrical short circuit, triggering panic. Workers rushed out of the premises to safety.

The warehouse supervisor, Srivaradhan (34), immediately alerted the police control room and the Fire and Rescue services. Firefighters from Saidapet and T. Nagar rushed to the spot and battled the blaze before bringing it under control.

No injuries or casualties were reported in the incident. However, vegetables and grocery items worth approximately ₹40 lakh were destroyed in the fire.
