In a major scare at the Delhi Assembly on Monday, a masked man drove an SUV through a police picket and entered the premises, placing an artificial plant on the porch near the office of Speaker Vijender Gupta, who was present at the time.

CCTV footage showed that he spent at least five minutes inside, during which he also sat in the Speaker’s vehicle, before driving off, an officer said.

The police identified the man as Sarabjit Singh, 37, a resident of Puranpur in Uttar Pradesh’s Pilibhit. He was arrested nearly two hours after the incident from the Roop Nagar picket point following a citywide search. Two other persons who were with him at the time of interception were also arrested, and their roles are under investigation, said the police.

A case has been registered at the Civil Lines police station under BNS sections related to attempt to murder, criminal trespass with preparation to commit an offence, use of criminal force against a public servant, and Section 3 of the Prevention of Damage to Public Property Act, the police added.

The incident occurred around 2.10 p.m. when the man drove through gate No. 2 to enter the Assembly premises, which is secured by over 100 security personnel from the Delhi police and the Central Reserve Police Force.
