The Inter-Departmental Sports Mela (IDSM-2026) of the Waltair Division commenced here on Saturday, marking the beginning of a month-long celebration of athleticism, teamwork and railway camaraderie.
The inaugural ceremony, held at the Waltair Railway Cricket Stadium, was led by Divisional Railway Manager Lalit Bohra, along with Jyotsna Bohra, president of the East Coast Railway Women’s Welfare Organisation (ECoRWWO).
Mr. Bohra officiated the toss for the opening match, interacting with the players and setting an engaging tone for the competition.
Organised annually by the East Coast Railway Sports Association (ECoRSA), the event has brought together employees from 14 departments, all competing for top honours across a range of sporting disciplines.
The Mela opened with an energetic ceremony that reflected the division’s strong sporting culture. A key highlight was the lighting of the Olympic Torch, symbolising perseverance and fair play. The torch was carried around the stadium by international-level sportspersons before being handed over to the DRM, who lit the main flame, marking the official commencement of the games.
