The Airports Authority of India (AAI) has said that the proposal for commencing international courier cargo operations at the Tiruchi international airport was not “economically viable at present”.
An official communication to this effect was sent to Tiruchi MP Durai Vaiko recently by the AAI following his email requesting for operationalisation of the International Courier Terminal at the Tiruchi airport.
In the communication sent late last month to Mr. Durai Vaiko, the AAI said the Tiruchi international airport was situated about 350 km from the Chennai international airport and 330 km from the Bengaluru international airport both of which support operational courier cargo services.
“Due to existing financial losses including high Customs Cost Recovery charges and limited revenue potential, the proposal for commencing international courier cargo operations at Tiruchi airport shall not be economically viable at present,” the AAI said in its letter.
“However, AAI Cargo Logistics and Allied Services Company Ltd is exploring alternative options including selection of Operation and Maintenance operator for international cargo operations (including courier) for the Tiruchi airport”, the AAI communication said.
