Costco's $1.50 hot dog and soda deal holds legendary status. Now it has a halo effect, too.
A limited-release "I Got That Dog In Me" bourbon hit the shelves and caught the eye of whiskey fans and non-imbibers alike. The eye-catching aspect? A picture of Costco's $1.50 food court meal deal on the bottle.
The single-barrel bourbon's name reflects a meme devoted to a slang phrase for highly competitive individuals, especially athletes. But it also pertains to the warehouse chain's popular inflation-proof hot dog.
Shoppers began spotting the bourbon, which sold for $85.99, less than a week ago in Washington, DC, but it was not found on the Costco website. Among the whiskey and Costco commenters on Reddit, one suggested it arrived on shelves the night of March 27 and had sold out the following morning.
"It was one single barrel only and sold out in hours," Pete Nevenglosky, co-founder of Rare Character Whiskey Co., told USA TODAY. The Lexington, Kentucky, company bottled the "I Got That Dog In Me" single-barrel Kentucky straight bourbon whiskey, which clocked in at 126 proof or 63.05% alcohol.
