Donald Trump was welcomed by an adoring crowd who overwhelmingly applauded his mere presence at the Kennedy Center, now rebranded in his image, on Tuesday — or at least that’s what the White House suggested on social media.
A clip shared by the White House’s “Rapid Response 47” account on X appeared to show the president and his wife Melania Trump waving in response to mostly cheers and woos as they took their seats for an opening night performance of the musical “Chicago.”
In reality, the first couple was hit with some boos and jeers that were barely audible in the White House clip but apparent in a longer video shared by The Daily Caller’s Reagan Reese, who accurately noted that the less-than-enthusiastic reaction was eventually drowned out by cheers in a post to X.
Reese acknowledged the same in a pool report on the Trumps’ appearance, and additional footage, shared by Mediaite, confirms that some boos trickled in from the crowd.
A spokesperson for the White House, when asked about its social media clip, told HuffPost the president “saved the Trump-Kennedy Center, and he was warmly welcomed by the crowd at the opening night of ‘Chicago.’”
