JEAN-MICHEL TIXIER FOR M LE MAGAZINE DU MONDE

ince it is well established that only fools never change their minds, let us try to show a minimum of clear-sightedness, if not intelligence. In October 2012, we ourselves publicly condemned leather pants, mocking the way some people would lose their sense of style to indulge their youthful fantasies. At the time, we likened those who wore them to failed rock stars, frustrated bikers, or repressed cowboys – take your pick.

Nearly 14 years later, we have changed our minds on the subject. While leather pants have yet to make it into our own wardrobe – let's not get carried away – their appeal and charm seem much more evident to us now. When leather trousers are freed from costumes and disguises, paired with more ordinary and less aggressive fabrics, and – most importantly – chosen in the right size (the one that doesn't turn undressing into a grueling task), this piece can genuinely add a bold touch to an outfit and a wardrobe.

In truth, more than the color, cut, or the quality of the leather, the secret lies in the wearer's ability to make the garment seem unremarkable. In practice, when wearing leather pants for the first time, it is best to hide your emotions, rein in your excitement and spare colleagues or friends any sign of the thrill you may feel at following in the footsteps of Jim Morrison or Catwoman for a day. Say nothing. And if the pants squeak, silence them with a nourishing leather conditioner designed for the purpose.
