A class 10 student drowned in Somavati river, near Ujire, on Saturday.

The Belthangady police identified the deceased as Mohammed Hafeez, a student of Anugraha High School in Ujire.

The police said Hafeez returned home, about four km from the school, after appearing for the SSLC examination. In the evening, he went along with his three friends to swim in the river. Hafeez got stuck in the water, while others managed to return to the river bank.

Local swimmers rushed and fished out Hafeez’s body.

He is the second of the three children. His father works in a hotel in Goa, the Belthangady police said.
