European Commissioner for Energy and Housing, Dan Jorgensen, during a plenary session at the European Parliament in Brussels, March 25, 2026. OLIVIER HOSLET/EPA/MAXPPP
European Commissioner for Energy and Housing Dan Jorgensen stated in an interview with Le Monde that the war in the Middle East is causing a price crisis in Europe, but not a supply crisis. The Danish Social Democrat believes that the deployment of renewable energy and electricity interconnections between European countries must be accelerated.
This interview has been lightly edited for concision and clarity.
The US, through its ambassador in Brussels, threatened in a Financial Times interview on Monday, March 23, to reconsider Europe's access to American liquefied natural gas (LNG). Are you concerned about this at a time when the war in the Middle East is causing energy prices to spike?
I was very surprised by those comments. They do not reflect the discussions that we are having continuously with the US administration. It is clear that Europe has a big interest in buying American LNG, just as the US has a strong interest in selling it to us. This is a win-win situation, and the US itself has actively supported this approach. So I do not expect that to change at all.
