White House communications director Steven Cheung lashed out Tuesday at award-winning journalist and former CBS News reporter Scott MacFarlane for joining progressive media company MeidasTouch. “Every reporter who ‘leaves’ (more like fired from) their outlet always comes out as a deranged liberal. Every. Single. Damn. Time,” Cheung wrote on X. “Just goes to show how biased news media has become.”MacFarlane exited CBS News earlier this month, noting it was his decision to leave. The network has been undergoing a rightward shift and staffing overhaul under the leadership of David Ellison, the CEO of parent company Paramount Skydance, who hand-picked CBS’s editor-in-chief, Bari Weiss.MeidasTouch announced MacFarlane’s new position as its chief Washington correspondent on Monday.MacFarlane celebrated his new role by telling followers in a video that he and his new network “share the same North Star of communicating that when you have news to break or something important to explain, just get to it.”“It’s important when we underscore how significant this moment is, this moment of unique political toxicity and unique political danger. And MeidasTouch and I have long shared this same philosophy,” MacFarlane said. “You don’t platform lies, you don’t platform conspiracy theories, and you don’t allow for the whitewashing of history. We’ll do that together.”White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt also posted about MacFarlane’s new role, calling MeidasTouch “far-left.”Federal Communications Commission Chair Brendan Carr then commented, “Same job, new duty station.”“I actually like that,” MacFarlane said about Carr’s take. “It is the same job, and it is a new duty station, in the capital in both cases, but reporting for you from a different organization.”MeidasTouch co-founder Brett Meiselas addressed the comments from Trump’s circle in an Instagram video. “Let’s be honest, they wouldn’t be attacking us if they weren’t afraid,” Meiselas said. “Because this, right here, is a major moment for independent media. They are scared of you. They are scared of people power.”Close
