Democrat Emily Gregory won a special election for a Florida state House district that covers Mar-a-Lago, President Donald Trump’s residence in Palm Beach, marking an electoral upset that Democrats hailed as a sign of favorable momentum ahead of the midterms.

Democrat Emily Gregory won the special election for Florida state House's 87th district that covers President Donald Trump's Mar-a-Lago residence.

With nearly all votes counted, Gregory was ahead of her Republican rival Jon Maples by 797 votes, or around 2.5 points.

President Donald Trump had endorsed Maples on Truth Social, calling him an “America First Patriot,” and on Monday, he urged his supporters to “GET OUT AND VOTE FOR JON MAPLES.”

Trump carried the district by 11 points in the 2024 presidential election, and Republican Mike Caruso, who previously represented the district in the state legislature, won his election in 2024 by 19 points.
