Days after the Congress party accused Mizoram Chief Minister Lalduhoma of acquiring vast tracts of land near key development zones, the Chief Minister said he had purchased the properties at the request of the owners as they were “facing hardships”.Those who have been Members of Legislative Assemblies would understand the practice of buying land to help people facing hardships in their constituency, rather than out of personal need or desire, Mr. Lalduhoma said on Monday (March 23, 2026).“I have been elected three times in this constituency. Because people facing hardships pleaded with me to buy their land/garden, I bought land even though I didn’t need it. It was to help people in difficulty. I bought it before the election,” the Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM) leader said, speaking at a party programme in Aizawl.Last week, the Mizoram Congress’s youth wing alleged that Mr. Lalduhoma has purchased around 25-20 acres of land around the Vantawng Falls viewpoint, and in the Kanghmun South area in Serchhip district.Youth Congress president Laltawnliana claimed that the Chief Minister had acquired the land in early 2024 from multiple landowners, and also purchased land parcels in Kanghmun South. The land near Vantawng Falls could potentially benefit from a proposed ₹34.50 crore ropeway project, while the Kanghmun South land falls within the proposed Thenzawl Peace City project area.
