The Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption(DVAC) has booked former Joint Director of Drugs Control P.U. Karthikeyan and his wife Hemalatha for possessing assets disproportionate to their known sources of income.

Karthikeyan was arrested in July last year by DVAC for demanding and accepting a ₹25,000 bribe from a Vellore-based soap manufacturing businessman to clear an application for licence.

Karthikeyan entered the Drugs Control Department as a Drug Inspector in 1999 and was serving as Joint Director of Drugs Control and Director in-charge at the DMS campus on Anna Salai since 2023. He held the position of Director in-charge from June 1, 2025. His wife Hemalatha is a yoga trainer.

The FIR by DVAC alleged that the assets accumulated by Karthikeyan and Hemalatha during the period between Jan 1, 2020, and July 31, 2025 were worth ₹99.86 lakh, which works out to 121.7 % of their total income during the check period.

A case was registered, and the FIR has been placed before the Principal Sessions Judge, City Civil Court. Investigation is ongoing.
