The control tower at New Jersey's Newark Liberty International Airport was evacuated after reports of a possible fire, temporarily halting flights there on the morning of Monday, March 23, federal officials confirmed.
"Arrivals and departures are temporarily paused at (the airport) in New Jersey after air traffic controllers evacuated the tower because of a burning smell coming from an elevator," Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) spokesperson Rick Breitenfeldt told USA TODAY.
The incident was reported about 7:30 a.m. local time, Breitenfeldt said.

Officials reported air traffic controllers returned to their stations and the ground stop was lifted about 30 minutes after the incident was reported.
