Feb. 19 (UPI) -- Newark Liberty International Airport was temporarily closed after the evacuation of a JetBlue Airbus A320 due to smoke in the cabin after an "engine issue" forced the aircraft to make an emergency landing.
The airport shut for a little over an hour on Wednesday night after Flight 543, which had departed en route to West Palm Beach just after 5.30 p.m. EST turned back, making an emergency landing about 17 minutes later. No one was hurt in the incident.
JetBlue told CNN the aircraft had encountered a problem with its engines and there was smoke in the cabin.
The Federal Aviation Administration said it had issued a ground stop, halting all flights inbound to the airport which was eventually lifted at about 7 p.m. EST., and had launched an investigation.
