The Tamil Nadu Agricultural University (TNAU) has almost doubled its seed production target to 3500 tonnes during 2026-27, through 66 centres across the State.
During 2025-26, the University had produced and distributed to farmers 1800 tonnes of seeds across 40 crops and 175 varieties.
The plan of action for doubling production was discussed at the 12th Annual Seed Workshop organised by the Seed Centre, TNAU, earlier this week. About 100 scientists from the 66 centres took part.
In the absence of adverse seasonal influence, doubling of seed production was quite a possibility, R. Umarani, Director, Seed Centre, TNAU, said.
There is a high demand for quality seeds from farmers. TNAU being a research institution, its Seed Centre meets only two percent of the requirement. TNAU’s research stations are equipped to scale up seed production, Prof. Umarani said.
