Tension prevailed at Kalampalayam near Karamadai in Coimbatore district on Wednesday after the police and Revenue Department officials intervened in the burial of a Muslim individual at a burial ground under dispute.
The incident unfolded when local residents and family members attempted to bury the body at the burial ground near Ashurkhana Masjid. The situation escalated after the police detained members of the mosque committee. Relatives of the deceased and Muslims staged a protest, condemning the police action. They demanded to carry out the final rites without interference.
Sources said that representatives from the mosque petitioned Coimbatore District Collector late on Wednesday. Police sources said that last rites of the deceased were held at a burial ground for Muslims at Dhayanur on Thursday.
Members of the Tamil Nadu Muslim Munnetra Kazhagam and Manithaneya Makkal Katchi staged protests in Coimbatore and other locations condemning the incident on Wednesday night.
