March 18 (UPI) -- A cyberattack by Iran-linked hackers on the medical technology company Stryker last week highlighted the modern threats facing the United States.
The hacker group Handala claimed responsibility for the attack, saying on social media that it was retaliation on behalf of Iran.
There is no evidence that Iranian officials or the Iranian military were involved.
Gaps in cybersecurity
Handala executed what is called a wiper attack, accessing Stryker's systems by using compromised credentials with administrative access, Jason Mafera, field chief technology officer for healthcare with IGEL Healthcare, told UPI. Unlike many cyberattackers that use ransomware to extort victims, the purpose of this attack was to destroy.
