Residents flagged delay in implementating infrastructure work to restore playgrounds ahead of summer holidays in various zones of the city.
Many zones of the Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) do not have adequate open spaces and modern playgrounds for children to play.
Otteri resident Madan Kumar, a lawyer who spearheaded a campaign by north Chennai residents for a modern playground, said the work on a modern playground in ward 75 of Thiru. Vi. Ka. Nagar Assembly Constituency has been suspended for many weeks.
Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin had announced a mini stadium in March 2025, following a successful campaign by north Chennai residents who demanded the facility in a GCC land by converting a waste processing unit with additional funding from Thiru. Vi. Ka. Nagar MLA Thayagam Kavi Local Area Development Scheme.
“Once the mini stadium is launched, hundreds of children in the neighbourhood will grow and develop into disciplined sportspersons. As the work has already been launched ahead of the announcement of Assembly elections, we request the officials to expedite the project,” said Mr. Madan Kumar.
