The Greater Chennai Corporation’s (GCC) Amma canteens have started registering a rise in sales and footfall as the acute shortage of LPG cylinders, due to the West Asian conflict, continues in the city.
A canteen in Anna Nagar has registered a 25% increase in sales in the past two days, while another canteen in Korattur has registered a 50% increase.
“Many small hotels and street food vendors in our street remained shut for the past few days because of LPG shortage. As a result, many college students have started visiting our canteen in the past two days. Daily sales has increased by 50% in the past two days,” said an employee of an Amma Canteen in the western part of the city.
AIADMK councillor J. John said: “As small and medium food business operators in vicinity of Amma canteen remained shut, college students started visiting Amma canteen located on the same road. However, GCC has restricted the utilisation of LPG cylinders for cooking to reduce costs. One Amma canteen has been permitting workers to utilise only half a cylinder of LPG for cooking every day. GCC should immediately remove such restrictions in LPG utilisation for cooking, which was introduced only to reduce costs in Amma canteens. GCC should permit Amma canteens to utilise additional LPG cylinders without any restrictions in the quantity of food cooked and ensure additional supply of LPG for all Amma canteens.”
