A total of 38,128 cases are pending in 22 courts of Udupi District as on March 13, which is a day prior to National Lok Adalat to be held on March 14.

As per information available on the National Judicial Data Grid, of the 38,128 cases, 22,147 were criminal cases, while the remaining 15,981 were civil cases. The oldest case was the partition suit of January 1998 pending in the court of Principal Senior Civil Judge and Chief Judicial Magistrate, Udupi.

A total of 913 cases were pending for over 10 years. It includes a case each of 1991 and 1992, two cases each of 1993 and 1997, five cases of 1999, two cases of 2000, four cases of 2001, two of 2002 and five of 2003. There were 3,936 cases pending for a period between five and 10 years, and 3,518 cases pending for period between three and five years. There were 13,714 cases pending for less than a year.

Among the pending cases include 19,348 magisterial cases, 7,051 civil suits, 2,976 execution petitions, 2,797 motor vehicle accident claim petitions and 1,477 bail applications.

Of the 4,512 that have been disposed, 3,062 cases were closed within a year, 496 within two years and 340 cases in three years. As many as 16 cases were disposed in a period of more than 15 years. While 1220 were disposed otherwise, 950 after accused pleaded guilty, 546 were allowed following hearing, 412 were dismissed, 333 settled through alternate dispute resolution system and 264 acquittals.
