ince February 28, Benjamin Netanyahu has sought to complete his plan to reshape the Middle East through war. The massive attack against Iran is being carried out with the United States. But Israel expects to be the main beneficiary, as it aims to break its principal enemy once and for all and reinforce its dominance over the entire region. By striking Tehran, the Israeli prime minister is keeping every one of his campaign promises, unlike Donald Trump. On the contrary, this has been an objective pursued by Israel for decades.
This brutal attack is being conducted in disregard of international law and has resulted in war crimes, regardless of the legitimate outrage provoked by the Iranian regime, which foments regional unrest and oppresses its own people. Its impact is already global. The longer it continues, the more it will weigh on countries that have nothing to do with the conflict.
The ease with which the Israeli army gradually took control of Iranian airspace over three successive waves of clashes, from April 2024 to February 28, highlights the weaknesses of the Islamic Republic. It also serves as a reminder that Iran has extended its reach across the Near and Middle East by capitalizing on opportunities – such as Israel's ousting of the Palestine Liberation Organization from Lebanon in 1982 and the dismantling of the Iraqi regime by the US in 2003.
