A 42-year-old man was killed in the Sri Lankan Tamils Rehabilitation camp in Gummidipoondi on Saturday (March 7, 2026) night. The murder led to the camp residents staging a road roko on the GNT Road on Sunday (March 8) affecting traffic for a few hours.

A senior police official of the Tiruvallur district said Sivakumar alias Kanna was the chairman of the camp management committee of the Sri Lankan Tamil rehabilitation camp located at Pethikuppam near Gummidipoondi where more than 3,000 people are residing.

On Saturday night, the victim was walking inside the camp when three persons who reportedly had personal enmity picked a quarrel with him and suddenly assaulted him with an iron rod which they had concealed. Sivakumar tried to escape from the place but fell unconscious on the spot in a pool of blood.

Upon alert, the Gumidipoondi police arrived at the spot and rushed him to the Government Hospital where he was pronounced ‘brought dead’.

The jurisdictional SIPCOT Police later sent the body to the Ponneri Government Hospital for post-mortem. After filing a case, the police have arrested six persons including two women named Pushpa Jothi and Akshaya who are also residents of the camp.
