Ian Huntley, the former school caretaker who murdered two 10-year-old schoolgirls in Soham, died in hospital on Saturday (7 March) following an attack in a maximum security prison.

Huntley, who murdered Holly Wells and Jessica Chapman in 2002, had been on life support in hospital after being hit repeatedly over the head by an inmate armed with a metal bar at HMP Frankland, Durham, on 26 February.

His life support was switched off at lunchtime on Friday (6 March) after brain tests showed he was in a vegetative state. He was confirmed dead on Saturday.
