August 2002: the summer we watched a senseless tragedy unfold in Soham

The child killer Ian Huntley has died after being attacked in prison.

The former school caretaker killed Holly Wells and Jessica Chapman, both aged 10, in Soham, Cambridgeshire on 4 August 2002. The girls had left a family barbecue to buy sweets.

On 26 February reports emerged that Huntley, 52, had been taken to hospital after being assaulted at HMP Frankland. It is thought he was knocked unconscious with a metal pole, according to the Sun, which first reported the attack. It was widely reported he had been taken off life support on Friday after his condition deteriorated.
