Premier Giorgia Meloni had a telephone conversation with French President Emmanuel Macron on Thursday to talk about the Iran war, her office said in a statement.

"The two leaders discussed the implications of the conflict in Iran for both the Middle East and global situation, focusing in particular on the impact of hostilities on freedom of navigation," the statement said.

Meloni and Macron "also reaffirmed their shared commitment to supporting the Gulf nations affected by Iran's unjustifiable attacks, the security of Cyprus, and avoiding a military escalation in Lebanon" it said.

"They agreed to remain in close contact regarding the development of the crisis".
